Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can be stressful, but taking the right steps quickly can make all the difference in protecting your teeth and minimizing discomfort. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or broken dental appliance, knowing what to do can help prevent further complications and make your visit to the dentist more effective. A few steps to take include the following:

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

The first and most important step during any emergency is to stay calm. Panicking can make it harder to think clearly and act quickly. Take a moment to assess the situation. Identify the issue, such as a lost filling, chipped tooth, or bleeding gums, and determine the severity. This will help you decide the next steps and communicate effectively when you call your dentist.

Control Any Bleeding

If there is bleeding, use a clean piece of gauze or cloth to apply gentle pressure to the area. For persistent bleeding, hold the gauze in place for about 10-15 minutes until it subsides. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, this could indicate a more serious injury, and you should seek immediate dental or medical attention.

Handle a Knocked-Out Tooth Properly

A knocked-out tooth requires quick action to improve the chances of saving it. Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root, to avoid damaging the tissue. Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub it. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it there while heading to the dentist. If reinserting it isn’t an option, store the tooth in a container of milk or a tooth-preservation product, or keep it in your mouth between your cheek and gums to keep it moist. Reimplantation within 30 minutes offers the best chance for successful reattachment, according to the American Association of Endodontics.

Relieve Pain and Swelling

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help reduce discomfort and inflammation for toothaches, swelling, or minor injuries. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can also help minimize swelling and numb the area temporarily. Avoid applying heat, as it may worsen inflammation.

Protect Broken or Chipped Teeth

If a tooth is chipped or broken, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and use a piece of gauze to control any bleeding. If the tooth is causing discomfort or sensitivity, you can cover it with dental wax or sugarless gum as a temporary measure to protect it from further damage. Save any fragments of the tooth and bring them with you to your dental appointment.

Call Your Dentist Immediately

Once you’ve taken initial steps to manage the situation, contact your dentist as soon as possible. Explain the nature of the emergency and the steps you’ve already taken. At Kearns Family Dentistry, we offer same-day appointments for urgent situations. Prompt professional care can prevent complications and improve outcomes.

Prevent Future Emergencies

After addressing the immediate issue, consider ways to prevent future emergencies. This might include wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding chewing hard objects like ice or pens, and maintaining regular dental checkups to catch problems early.
